How to read the result

There is no official standard for how much a church should spend on staff. Denominational and finance resources describe a wide range, from about one third of the budget in some models to half or a little more in many churches. A church with a large mortgage, expensive building or heavy missions giving will look different from one that rents space.

Some lenders look at staffing plus debt payments as a share of undesignated giving and prefer it to be no more than about 70%. The optional check above uses that rule of thumb. Treat it as a conversation starter, not a verdict.
